The pleasures of the province "The whole province is lovely. The mountains of the Vicentino are picturesque in a Romantic way, with their little ravines enlivened by play of water and greenness. In other places you find fossils, enormous palms crushed onto slabs of stone..."
Such is the recollection of his place of origin offered by the writer Guido Piovene. Cities where art flourished, historic villas, natural landscapes, culture: these are just some of the features that characterize our province and invite tourists to immerse themselves in the Vicentino and savour the pleasures it offers.
The beauty of culture
Vicenza and its province have for centuries been a wellspring of art and culture. The names of Anfrea Palladio, Vincenzo Scamozzi, and Carlo Scarpa are bound up with its hystory. Great men of letters soch as Wolfgang Goethe, Antonio Fogazzaro, Goffredo Parise and Guido Piovene have likewise been enchanted by the Vicenza area and its atmosphere may be sensed in their works.
The active holiday
Our province gives sport lovers the chance to practise every kind of sport: golf in the hills or the plain, horseriding, free climbing, skiing, both alpine and nordic, canoeing at Valstanga. Tonezza boats a well-known centre for tennis in summer while Recoaro offers parapente, and Mount Grappa hang gliding.
The Rhythm of relaxation
Peace and tranquillity, away from the hectic pace of city life: one more reason for spending a holiday in the Vicentino. Tonezza and the Fiorentini tableland, the Posina and Agno valleys and the Valsugana harbour spots that are still unspoiled, where the pleasures of nature can be rediscovered. A stay at the spa town of Recoaro will be health restoring and a swim at the little Gorgo waterfalls or in the River Astico may offer a welcome respite on a sultry summer's day.
Places of religious interest
In 1426 and in 1428 the Virgin Mary appeared to a simple farm woman on top of the Berico Hill. A basilica was erected on the spot and today it attracts millions of believers. Many other sanctuaries and convets exist throughout the province: St. Pancrazio at Barbarano, St. Maria at Isola Vicentina, St. Maria dei Miracoli at Lonigo and Madonna dell'Olmo at Thiene.
Your heart in your throat
The local cusine covers an array of inimitable flavours, including dishes like dried salted cod with steaming maize polenta, asparagus with eggs, "bigoli con l'arna" (spaghetti with duck sauce), and "Torresani" (pigeons). These dishes are accompanied by the full-bodied local wines.
